Say it out loud: "I'm going to write my memoirs!" Or maybe you want to hire a memoir writer. You have heard about celebrities hiring ghost writers. Then you hear about personal biographers: what is the difference?
A memoir is basically: "This is my story, the way I want to tell it." In today's book market, a memoir typically will not include alot of fact-checking, cross-checking, and research: the writer relies almost solely on the client's memories.
A biography is generally considered to include research and fact-checking. If you say you were in Germany in 1944 and give me a city and a date and an anecdote, as your personal biographer I will spend some tiime researching online to find any accompanying details as recorded in world or regional history or military history. And, sometimes the stories a person remembers are actually a better record of history than what history books have compiled, in their severaly condensed version of history.
Once our loved ones have passed on, we have only sketchy memories--unless we have taken time to preserve the family history that only they can tell. Read Sheridan Hill's essay encouraging you to discover and capture your family history now.
How does it work? Nothing can replace interviews when it comes to documenting history, whether it is personal, family, or business. Once we begin our interviews, people find that memories come floating back. Stories they had long forgotten rise to the surface. After 30 years of interviewing, my style is both warm and efficient. The process can be as simple as having a few talks on the phone or in person. Sheridan Hill begins drafting your story. We can also research your genealogy and expertly weave in local, regional, and world events into your story. When a section of the manuscript is completed (several chapters,) you will receive a draft to review. This process continues until you are satisfied with the manuscript.
You may also choose photographs to illustrate the different times and people in your life. When you are satisfied with the print-ready book, I manage the printing to ensure that you receive the best quality. One choice is an archival book that will last 200 years or more. Sheridan Creative archival books are printed by a high-quality offset press (not a photocopier) using real ink, not toner (copy machines and quick-print shops use toner, which breaks down quickly) on archive-quality, acid-free paper.
